Oriente
Oriente was formed in 1994 by Cuban-born guitarist/composer Eddy Balzola. After years of touring with a wide variety of music acts – from Reggae to Vegas show bands – his creative intensity finally grabbed the wheel and Balzola turned all of his energy toward his own project, naming it after the richly musical eastern region of Cuba. Oriente’s soulful, signature sound features guitar-driven tumbaos, ferocious Afro-Latin percussion and brass , fusing Cuban roots with Blues, Jazz and Brazilian influences. The band debuted at New Orleans’ renowned Snug Harbor Jazz Club in 1994,creating serious buzz and attracting local musicians, DJs and world class audiences excited by the hard-driving, melodic Afro-Cuban roots fusion. That organic music scene continues to influence the band’s soulful sound & style. Earlier band incarnations included great musician friends featured on violin, piano, sax and flute, but for the past several years Balzola’s arrangements have evolved toward a different sound.
